The muzzle of mk2 is threaded, but 9mm doesn’t really need a flash hider. So I added a linear compensator aka noise re-direction device.

Works very well: the report becomes a lot less noticeable, especially with subsonic ammunition which doesn’t produce a secondary shockwave.

Accuracy observation: 100-147gr ammunition works well. 75gr or 158gr don’t, and neither do 50gr hypervelocity arounds. Lighter bullets show the best velocity gain, which means 100-110gr are probably optimal for the combination of accuracy, terminal effect and lighter felt recoil.

A shotgun might be more appropriate, but a pistol with a laser can be quicker to grab from the nightstand.

Long-range magic wand

Is she a model, or real?

At the time this photo was taken, the model has never fired a gun. The image is ok, but not amazing. As we worked with long guns, cross eye dominance was discovered.

A good quality red dot sight, like the Vortex Stikefire, solved that problem. A low-end one, such as what she actually used when learning later that day, doesn’t. She still managed to do quite well.

Harry Perette of Twisted Industries kindly provided a private range with a scary zombie, ammunition and rimfire guns, a Keltec SU22 and a .22 conversion of Ruger LC9. LC9 is a defensive, not target pistol, so Angel’s competent progress with its double action trigger was a good sign. Her ability to shoot the SU22 from standing, kneeling, squatting, sitting and prone was quite impressive. Consistent one inch groups at 15 yards are pretty good for the first time.

A range trip should be A)SAFE and B)FUN. That event proved both. And Angel topped that accomplishment today. She went to Project Appleseed workshop! Thanks to the capable and generous support of Appleseed volunteers, she was equipped, trained and had a great time.

So my models are real. Even if they don’t know weapons upon arrival, they know some after the first photo shoot. It helps with the realism. It also makes a very direct statement of peaceable intentions: “Here, have a skill that puts you on par with me in terms of power.”

Who, except a brain-eating zombie, would object to that?

Good ammo for Sub2000

Sub2000 (and most 9mm rifles) seem most accurate with lighter weight bullets. Zinc alloy ball made by MI Bullet gives about 2.5MOA and rather good penetration. These use fairly fast powders, so no flash from the longer barrel. Velocity, if I recall correctly was around 1450fps with the 88gr bullet. A 124gr load of the same type is also coming.

After the tour of Federal Ammunition plant in Anoka, I am convinced that fewer rounds of good ammo beat more bulk milsurp. The QC process at Federal is rather more impressive than the lack thereof that’s evident from the results I get from Tula and similar brands.

I love Tennessee Autumn…mid-November with 70*F weather. The targets we set up in the woods get populated with lead and copper, but without our ears getting a beating.

This rifle is one of five SU16s built by keltec in 300 Blackout. Since then, they’ve come up with adjustable gas systems, so something better is in the works. Still, it’s nice and light. It’s available in 5.56mm, numerous configurations.

Reflex AmTac suppressor is nice…but it will be almost another year before ATF deigns to sign off on me getting it. For now, my friends at DTV Tactical Innovations hold it for me while we wait for the paperwork.

16″ barrel, 26.1″ overall length with the stock extended — same length as M4 carbine collapsed, and with the same iron sight radius. Good trigger, not much felt recoil, weight 5.7lbs.The current version achieving 1.5MOA with 69gr match or 2MOA with 55gr and 62gr hunting loads is considered not good enough by the designer, so the production barrel will be better.  Bottom ejection, most controls ambidextrous, charging handle quick-swappable from side to side. For reference, the model is 5 feet tall. Availability expected Q1 of 2018.
